NaNoWriMo

November is fast approaching, not that any of us really need telling, right? Well, last year was the first year that I truly participated in National Novel Writing Month. I reached my goal of 50,000 words and I felt wonderful. But then I put the book down and struggled to pick it up several times this year. But that is neither here nor there.

The point I'm trying to make is that this year I will be participating again. Yes, I will be away for 5 days on a sales trip to CIROBE (Anyone else going to that?) and I have a full-time job, and need sleep eventually, but I've decided to push myself. I've used working full-time as a crutch. I've never lived on my own and worked a full-time job, and hey, I needed some adjustment time. But it's gone on long enough, and the guilt is starting to hurt me. So, I have two weeks to finish the outline of my newest novel. Deadlines, a writer's best friend and worst enemy.

Is anyone else participating in NaNo? Do you think, if I feel the inspiration, that I should start writing my book early and just count all the words I wrote in November for the contest? I'm not saying I will start writing it next week, but if I feel the urge, do I want to ignore it for the sake of NaNo? I'm thinking no. Go with my gut. What would you do?

I don't recall my user name for NaNo, but when I look it up, I'll post it here for anyone interested in meeting up there for support.

  1. This is my first year participating in NaNoWriMo. Excited is an understatement! I have never written on a deadline before, and I'm interested in seeing this through to the end.

    Happy writing!

  2. I'm all for tweaking the rules to work for me. In my opinion, as long as you're only counting words written in Nov, go for it. Purists will argue, but hey, why ignore your muse?

I'm still debating giving it a shot this year. Won in 07, lost by...9k? last year. I'll be gone for a week too.

    Have fun outlining!

  5. Whichever you decide, good luck! Personally, I'd wait and try all of it in November. Prove it to yourself that you can do it all in a month. It's a fantastic feeling. :)

  6. Oh, I like your blog, by the way! You have a full time job. I have a three year old. My three year old doesn't come with evenings free or holidays, but I do find time to squeeze in writing. It's hard either way! Good luck. :)

  8. Thanks, Lady Glamis. I might just have to wait until November if I don't finish plotting it until then. :)

And Anonymous (aka Allison, I think), of course you would remember it. Care to tell me? Or I'll look it up when I remember. :-P
